Maybourne Marvels

Claridge's, Mayfair
In 1929, thirty years after Claridge's opened its doors, the Art Deco avant-garde, Oswald Milne, transformed the more traditional and staid lobby into the art deco jewel of Mayfair, not to say, London. In the last 78 years the weighty bronze and gilt metal revolving foyer doors, fingerprinted for decades by the rich and famous, (unless they use the discreet mews entrance), have lifted many a spirit in one full swing. Entering Claridge's is and always has been special, and now, even more so.

It may seem a little unfair that one born out of the ultimate silver cutlery drawer should have a talent worthy of rooftop bellowing; but it's a fact. David Linley is a serious Art Deco artisan and there is no better place to enjoy this distinctive style, immaculately interpreted and exquisitely restored, than at Claridge's.

Whilst Claridge's is supremely British in design and concept, it is also refreshingly cosmopolitan. There is no stuffiness, no jingoism, and none of the aloofness so often associated with aristocratic hauteur: now it is ththe aloofness so often associated with aristocratic hauteur: now it is the ultimate destination for many luxe-trotters from around the globe while for some it is their familiar abode when visiting London. So, its location is quite privileged, not to say priceless.

One Aldwych

One Aldwych

One Aldwych

For many luxe-trotters One Aldwych is theatre-land's pièce de résistance for a 5 star hotel choice.

Timely combinations of inventive and creative minds have created one of the most stylish hotels in London. Covent Garden, less than five minutes away, is the perfect locale for filling up the stockings with trinkets while enjoying outrageous displays of unashamed exhibitionism. The greatest West End theatres are in eye-view of many rooms and suites making the combination of hotel and location a fantastical experience.

One Aldwych was built in 1907 by Mewes and Davis for The Morning Post newspaper. The remarkable exterior, fashioned in sun-reflecting Norwegian granite, glistens from the patina of its past, and stands out as quite unique on this theatre-laden street. The dramatic entrance and lobby, which was the only part of the interior seen by the public, is aircraft-hanger-capacious with enormous polished oak arched windows. What's more, the bar in here is a tantalising spectacle, colourfully laden with promise, and shaking up the very best Martini's in town.

All the 105 rooms and suites are immaculately turned out: duvets are fantastically togged and luxuriantly goose down-filled; furniture is contemporary with comfort as key; technology is high end and the bathrooms are pristine with accessories by Ren. The luxury here is in the seamless confluence of understatement and superior quality.
